Lucila Chen, a graduate of Yale Secondary, is now using the $50,000, four-year scholarship to study in the university’s faculty of science, where she plans to major in neuroscience and then enter the U of A’s medical school. She said the money will ease her parents’ load of paying for her dream of becoming a doctor.

B.C. will soon become the first jurisdiction in Canada to recognize alcohol addiction as a chronic medical condition. ( 3/11/2011 )
Health Minister Colin Hansen said the change, to take effect April 1, will put the emphasis on preventive measures and give family doctors more time and resources to treat patients with alcohol addiction. "It's saying to family physicians that if they identify somebody that has a chronic alcohol problem, they can treat them in the same way they would treat complex illnesses," he said.

Abbotsford board of education considers status quo school calendar option ( 3/9/2011 )
Trustees held a special meeting on Monday to authorize inclusion of a calendar that is the same as the current one. School district superintendent Julie MacRae said the board added the option after considering what delegations said at a meeting on Feb. 21, as well as 1,500 responses to a survey on the issue.

B.C. police look for thousands of pilfered pigeons ( 3/2/2011 )
Police in the Fraser Valley community of Abbotsford are investigating after up to 5,500 pigeons were stolen. Constable Ian MacDonald, the police force’s spokesman, said the birds were taken in four separate incidents, starting in November. The most recent theft was Feb. 19, during which seven goats were also stolen.

Abbotsford Police unveil transformed Hummer for anti-gang messaging ( 2/24/2011 )
The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) is taking its anti-gang messaging on the road – literally. The APD unveiled its newest project today in its battle to turn young people away from the gang lifestyle. Operation Reclamation involved transforming a sand-coloured 2004 Hummer H2 into a vehicle sporting the APD's black-and-white theme, police lights, and a "skin" of graphics and messages. The vehicle was property forfeited to the province after a Victoria man was convicted of drug trafficking and weapons offences.

Vancouver received a 100/100 ranking for its health care services, education system and for its culture and environment rating. It also received an impressive 95/100 stability ranking. The report’s authors did note that Vancouver’s crime rate is on the rise. Vancouver’s murder rate of 2.6 per 100,000 is well above the Canadian 1.8 per 100,000 average.
